The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.
Isaiah 50:4
Lectors bring the living Word of God to the liturgical assembly. In and through them God speaks to the gathered faithful, and the Word of God is not merely read. Rather, it is proclaimed. Effective proclamation involves delivering the message with clarity, conviction, and an appropriate pace. Proclamation is a special ministry which presupposes faith and rouses faith in those who hear the Word proclaimed.
At St. Paul Parish, lectors proclaim the first and second readings from the Old and New Testaments during the Liturgy of the Word at Sunday Masses, Holy Days, and other special Masses. The lector for the first reading also welcomes parishioners, shares parish announcements, and leads the Call to Worship. In the absence of a deacon, a lector may also lead the Prayers of the Faithful. Lectors may serve at other events when readers are needed, such as the Stations of the Cross.
The average time commitment is once or twice a month and can be adjusted as needed. For daily Masses, lectors proclaim the readings and responsorial psalms, lead the Prayers of the Faithful, and serve as sacristans and acolytes. They may also serve as Eucharistic Ministers.
No prior experience is necessary. Parishioners who have received Confirmation and are in 8th grade or older are welcome to volunteer, and we will provide training.
