Indeed, the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any two-edged sword, it pierces to the point where it divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and the intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12-13
Praying with Scripture, or Lectio Divina, is a traditional form of prayer that invites us to bring the Word of God more deeply into our hearts and minds. Rooted in the early Church and developed within the monastic tradition, Lectio Divina offers a simple, prayerful way to encounter God through Scripture.
The practice traditionally follows four stages:
Lectio, or reading
Meditatio, or reflection
Oratio, or response
Contemplatio, or rest
Through these stages, we listen attentively to God’s Word, reflect on what it is saying to us, respond in prayer, and rest in God’s presence. The purpose of Lectio Divina is not simply to study Scripture, but to encounter God through His Word and carry that encounter into our everyday lives.
At our weekly gatherings, we read and re-read Scripture passages for the upcoming Sunday, usually the first reading and the Gospel, and share our reactions and insights with one another. Participants are always welcome to share, but no one is pressured to do so. A workbook is provided by the parish to guide our prayer and reflection.
No prior experience with Lectio Divina or preparation is necessary. Whether this form of prayer is new to you or already part of your spiritual life, you are welcome to join us.
